Principal’s Message, June 11, 2013

It is hard to believe that this year has come and gone!  I hope that all of our Arundel students and families have an exciting and memorable summer.

We are busy planning for next year and are organizing a parent night to talk about our Everyday Mathematics Program.  Please take this very short survey to help us plan the evening.

We do have some changes in staff for next year.  The big news is that Mr. Page will be leaving the 4th grade at Arundel.  He has accepted a position in another school district and we are very sad to see him go.  He has been a tremendous part of our fourth grade team and will be dearly missed by our staff, students and community.  Good luck to you Mr. Page!

Mrs. Grace will be retiring from Arundel School after 12 years of dedicated service to the students in our SDC Pre-School.  Thank you Mrs. Grace for the impact you have made at our school.

The SDC Pre-School will be moving to another site which means that Mrs. Banet will also be moving from our campus.  Thank you Mrs. Banet for all of the magic you have created in room 13!

Ms. Mackewicz and Mrs. Stephens will be our new Transitional Kindergarten team as we add two full TK classes composed of students from around our district.

With Ms. Mackewicz moving to a new grade and with Mr. Page leaving, we have hired two new teachers for the 2013-2014 school year.

Mrs. Shera Allbright will be joining our Kindergarten team and Ms. Jen Lenci will be joining our 4th grade team.  We look forward to welcoming them to the Arundel campus for next year.

Class lists for the the 2013-2014 school year will be placed in the office window one week before classes begin.  Please be on the look out for more information in our first AKN in August.

Once again, have a great summer!

Volunteers Needed for SCEF Opportunities

We are still trying to fill some crucial roles for next year and we need your help. We are looking for an Arundel Chair for the Education Foundation. Please get in touch with me for more information and a job description. It is substantial role but a worthwhile, fun role which will really get you involve in the San Carlos school community. This role can be shared. Grab a friend and join us!

We also need an Arundel Spring Fling Coordinator. This is a role with some time commitment involved but again, such a fun thing to do. Please contact me for more information.
Thanks

Art in Action Network

Some last words on Art in Action… If you would like to have your child’s artwork on display in the office over the summer, please contact Carolyn Danek at cal DOT danek AT att DOT net or leave it in the PTA room. We would love to have some beautiful artwork to display for the people who work and go through the office during the summer. You will be sure to get it back next school year!
Also, John Duarte is taking the last orders for framing your AiA art before summer! Please contact him NOW, johnathan AT gojobs DOT com. For just $35, a donation to SCEF, you could have the artwork mounted and framed!
Finally, thanks to everyone who volunteered their time and efforts to Art in Action. We couldn’t run such a rewarding program for our kids without your help! See you all next fall! Best, Carolyn Danek and Marissa Tsangaropoulos

PTA News

Wow, where did this school year go?! I can’t believe it is nearly over. It’s been a wonderful year for me as PTA president and I’d like to thank all the amazing volunteers who give us so much of your time here at school.
Looking forward, we still have volunteer positions to fill for the school year starting August. As many of our morning greeters are moving on this year, we need to fill their spots. Please let me know if you can be a morning greeter. It’s a great way to start your day. We also need someone to coordinate those greeters, we need yard duty people and hot lunch helpers. Let me know if you can help out!
Also, we still need another Chicken’s Ball rep. Chicken’s Ball is the oldest PTA fundraiser in the country and a great way to get involved in the San Carlos community.  If you are interested in being the book fair decorator, the dad’s night out coordinator or taking a role on the Spring Fling and Education Foundation teams, please let me know!
Phew, we are nearly there. Thanks everyone, have a great week.
Rachel

The first release of the new standardized tests are now available for students and families to preview. The new tests, called the Smarter Balanced Assessments, will examine the knowledge of the new Common Core Standards that will replace the State STAR tests for the 2014 – 2015 school year.

The State of California has adopted the Common Core standards, which for the first time is a set of national standards that 45 states have adopted. The final year for STAR testing, which is the California Standards Test (CST) that our 2nd – 4th graders currently take each spring, will be next year, 2013 – 2014. California students beginning in 2014 – 2015 will be accountable for showing a deeper level of understanding of these new standards. The exam is quite different from what is currently being used, and will allow students to show a degree of understanding currently not available on the current exams. The state has not yet determined if 2nd graders will be tested. Smarter Balanced Practice Tests are available in grades 3 – 8 and 11.

I strongly encourage you to acquaint yourself with the test as it gives you a strong glimpse at the direction standardized testing is moving.  Steps to use the practice exams are below.

Visit  http://www.smarterbalanced.org
Click – Smarter Balanced Assessments
Click – Practice and Pilot Test
Scroll down to and click on Explore the Smarter Balanced Practice Tests
Select the Student Interface Practice Test
When you see “Sign in” just click it (it will sign you in as a guest)
Select the grade level you would like to explore and click Yes
Select the type of test you wish to take
Follow directions of the Test instructions

We need your help!  This past week, Arundel has been experiencing an increase in head lice cases.  It is VERY IMPORTANT that you notify Jeanne if your child has lice.  We need to monitor this at school to stop the spread.   If two or more students in one class are found to have lice at school, an exposure notice will be sent home to all students in that class.  It is crucial that you follow the protocols indicated on this notice. A good practice is to routinely check your children at home.  We had a speaker from the Bay Area Head Lice Intervention Workshop after a PTA meeting last year. Click here to view helpful information about head lice.
